35th TOKYO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL
The season of cinema has come around again.
The Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF), held in Tokyo, reaches its 35th edition this year.

35th Tokyo International Film Festival ［Kurosawa Akira Award］
The winners have been decided: director Alejandro González Iñárritu and director Fukada Koji!
The Kurosawa Akira Award ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, October 29 at the Imperial Hotel.
Alejandro González Iñárritu made his feature debut in 2000 with Amores Perros, which won prizes in the Critics’ Week section of the 53rd Cannes Film Festival and took the Grand Prix at the 13th Tokyo International Film Festival, as well as earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. He went on to release Babel (2006), Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014) and The Revenant (2016), winning numerous honors including the Academy Award for Best Director. His latest work, Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths, was selected for the competition at this year’s Venice Film Festival and will screen in the Gala Selection section of the Tokyo International Film Festival, with a limited theatrical release from November. The selection committee cited the way his debut Amores Perros turned the world’s attention toward Mexican cinema, and the fact that he has continued to take on new challenges with every film even after winning the Academy Award and many other prizes. Iñárritu previously served as jury president at the Tokyo International Film Festival in 2009, and this marks his first return since then.
Fukada Koji won the Jury Prize in the Un Certain Regard section of the 69th Cannes Film Festival in 2016 for Harmonium, which also brought him the 67th Minister of Education’s Art Encouragement Prize for a New Artist in 2017. His activities extend beyond filmmaking: when the spread of COVID-19 pushed one small independent cinema after another into financial crisis, he joined fellow director Hamaguchi Ryusuke and others in launching the Mini-Theater Aid Fund, a crowdfunding campaign to support small cinemas across Japan. His latest film, LOVE LIFE, screened in competition at the recent Venice Film Festival, where it was met with resounding applause. The selection committee praised the quality of his work as a younger director and his promise as a Japanese filmmaker with an international future, and also spoke highly of his energetic work outside of filmmaking, leading to his selection as a recipient this year.
