Glass, lacquer,
and quiet light.
Hiroko Shoami brings together the precision of diamond-point
engraving and the depth of traditional Japanese lacquerwork.
Her works reveal shifting layers of light, texture, and ornament,
creating a distinctive dialogue between glass and urushi.
This exhibition presents Shoami’s work at Décoration,
located on the second floor of the Garden Tower at
Hotel New Otani Tokyo.

The Artist
Hiroko Shoami

Shoami’s practice combines the precision of diamond-point engraving
with Japanese lacquer techniques including raden mother-of-pearl
inlay and chinkin decoration. From this dialogue she developed
her own approach, Saishitsu Hari.
Her “Seiji” series is created through an exceptionally
time-intensive process of layering lacquer over glass
and working the surface with a fine metal point.
Across her practice, Shoami explores stillness, light,
and an aesthetic that moves naturally between Japanese
and Western traditions.

among other awards.
Saishitsu Hari
Shoami’s original technique combining layered urushi lacquer
on glass with diamond-point engraving and traditional Japanese
decorative methods such as raden and chinkin.
