Kyoto’s Autumn Foliage

仁和寺 (Ninna-ji), 清水寺 (Kiyomizu-dera), 東寺 (Tō-ji) — The Splendor of Autumn in Kyoto Awaits You

The season of pleasant autumn evening breezes has arrived.

Personally, autumn is my favorite season in Kyoto. Even I, who once found traveling alone difficult, love strolling through Kyoto at this time of year. Last year, I ventured a step beyond the heart of Kyoto, to places such as 貴船神社 (Kifune shrine). I had always driven past 貴船神社 on my way to 延暦寺 (Enryaku-ji) and elsewhere, and it had long been on my mind. I will share my 貴船神社 story in a future post.

The video at the top was filmed quite some time ago, yet it captures Kyoto’s shrines and temples, where time — and the seasons — flow on unchanged in a way found almost nowhere else in Japan. It is filled with scenes you too can encounter when you visit Kyoto. This time I have focused on temples in their autumn colors, but in the future I will also introduce local treasures such as wonderful places to eat.

For this year’s (2026) autumn foliage information for the three temples, including illumination periods, please visit the page below.
