Autumn leaves in Kyoto have a slightly different charm from those in other parts of Japan. In addition to the many shrines and temples, elegant Japanese maple trees can be found throughout the city, along its streets and in gardens, creating a uniquely atmospheric scenery. The people of Kyoto also place great importance on the changing seasons, often expressing them through hanging scrolls displayed in traditional alcoves during tea ceremonies and in their homes. We hope to continue protecting and passing on these traditions and this important part of Japanese culture.
This year’s video features the magical and relaxing autumn scenery of Ninna-ji Temple, To-ji Temple, and Kiyomizu-dera Temple. Autumn illuminations and special nighttime viewings will once again be held at these temples this year. Taking a peaceful stroll alone or with someone special is a wonderful way to enjoy the season. During the special autumn night viewing, a single blue beam of light shines from Kiyomizu-dera Temple into the night sky, symbolizing the compassion of Kannon, the Bodhisattva of Mercy. Visitors can enjoy the temple grounds surrounded by autumn leaves and experience a magical atmosphere unique to nighttime.
